10 Foods to Avoid after Weight Loss Surgery (And How to Substitute!)

Getting weight loss surgery is not the end of your journey; It is just the beginning. Always remember the rules, requirements, and recommendations when it comes to the foods you can and can’t eat post-op. One mistake can end everything you’ve worked for, sacrificed for, and struggled for.


Here is a list of 10 foods you should avoid, and what you can substitute them for instead:



1. Sweets, Candy, and Chocolate Bars


You should already know to avoid candies and chocolate bars, but if it isn't clear... COMPLETELY AVOID them after the surgery. They are processed, high in sugar, and they don’t provide much nutritional value. Plus, candy and chocolates don’t fully satisfy your hunger; the cravings you had are tempered shortly, but right after, it returns. There are many delicious protein bars created specifically for bariatric surgery patients, and yes, they taste great!


What to Eat Instead:

2. Pasta


A lot of the pasta on the shelves at grocery stores nowadays are highly processed and something you should DEFINITELY avoid after surgery. Pasta and noodles barely have any fiber or protein, and instead are filled with unneeded carbohydrates.


What to Eat Instead:

· Carrot Noodles

· Other Vegetable Noodles



3. White Rice


White Rice is put through a process which strips it of its nutrition. It is a carbohydrate and does not have a sufficient amount of protein, fiber, vitamins. When you eat a lot of refined carbohydrates after bariatric surgery, it often leads to weight gain.


What to Eat Instead:

· Grated cauliflower

· Quinoa

· Brown Rice



4. Sugary Drinks, Shakes, & Juices


Juices and other drinks are filled with sugar and don’t have much nutritional value. It’s much, much better to just eat the actual fruit itself. Just make sure to not eat the outer skin as your stomach might not be able to digest the skins of the fruit. Opt for protein shakes instead of sugary shakes, just make sure they are designed for gastric surgery patients.


What to Drink Instead:

5. Dairy Milk


Avoid Dairy Milk as it had lactose which is very hard to digest. This leads to many unwanted symptoms. It is also usually high in fat and calories, AND it does not make you feel fuller when you drink it. Opt for nut-milks instead.

6. Bread


It’s rare to find healthy breads when grocery shopping. They are usually very processed and don’t have much nutritional value. They also have a high amount of refined wheat, which is not good for your body.

· Sprouted Grain Bread



7. High-sugar Condiments


Ketchup, BBQ sauce, mayo, and other similar dressings are made with a lot of sugar. It is completely unnecessary for you.


What to Use Instead:

· Mustard (Did you know its 0 calories?)

· Herbs

· Seasonings

· Salsa



8. Generic Vitamins


It is common to get vitamin deficiencies after weight loss surgery. Don’t take regular vitamins. Stick to vitamins created for bariatric patients.


What to Take Instead:
