What to expect before, during, and after Weight Loss surgery

Before Weight Loss surgery, you or your loved one might have tried other ways to lose weight. Our programs help people deal with the physical, mental, and emotional challenges of surgery by developing a unique care plan.

You will eat smaller portions and less food. In addition to mindful eating, you will keep up with your exercise plan.

What happens before weight loss surgery?

Asleep study, EKG, chest x-ray, lab work, and a meeting with an anesthesiologist are some of the tests and clearances that You may do before surgery. Our clinical therapist and an EGD must be done two weeks before surgery for each patient to be checked out by us. In addition, each candidate must also take a mandatory class on treating patients.

Make sure you’re ready for and recovering from your weight loss surgery

Mount Sinai South Nassau’s bariatric team wants you to lose weight. Before your surgery, you’ll meet with a doctor, nurse, dietitian, and psychologist to make sure it’s the right thing to do to lose weight.

Pre-surgery tests:

An abdominal ultrasound to see if your gallbladder and liver are in good shape.

Some people also need to have a particular test to see if they have sleep apnea, but that’s not all (stopping of breathing during sleep)

It would help if you made food changes.

It will be rigorous and calorie-controlled before you get weight loss surgery. Reduce the size of your liver. It will also help to reduce the risk of complications during the surgery. They will meet with you to discuss what to eat before and after surgery.

What happens during and after weight-loss surgery?

After surgery, patients need to eat well to get better. Our registered clinical dietitians will go over the particular eating plan we’ve made for you to help your stomach heal, but here are some general rules:

  1. Eat slowly; eat a meal in 30 minutes or more to get through it.
  2. Keep going on your liquid diet for the whole two weeks that you’ve been on it.
  3. Make sure to chew your food thoroughly when you start eating solid food, like a sandwich or a cookie.
  4. Keep serving sizes small
  5. Don’t eat desserts or other foods with sugar as one of the first three ingredients.

People who don’t want to lose weight should not drink carbonated drinks or eat high-fat foods.

If you drink, don’t do that.

Don’t eat between your meals.

Keep a food log.

Many people lose more than 100 pounds in the first year, and most of them keep it off for a while. Following surgery, some people lose weight for up to two years and lose more than 200 pounds.

Do I have anything to hope for in terms of success?

Approximately 70% to 80% of people who have weight loss surgery have long-term success. Because permanent weight loss is a lifestyle change, remember that you’ll need to follow our diet, exercise, and support guidelines for a long time after the procedure. You’ll need to do this for months and years.
